Welcome to the Greek Islands

Greece, or Hellas, is known all over the world for its history and the beauty of the Greek islands. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world come to Greece to have there greece summer vacations on the mainland or on one of the Greek islands.

To the east and to the south of the mainland of Greece you will find the Aegean Sea, and on the west side you will find the Ionian Sea. The Greek islands are not less then 1400, but just 227 are inhabited, and only 78 of the Greek islands have a hundred inhabitants or more.

Some of the most popular Greek islands are: Crete, Rhodes, Evia (Euboea or Evvia), Lesvos (or Lesbos), Chios, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Corfu (or Kerkyra), Zakynthos (or Zante).

Greece is known worldwide as the cradle of western civilization. The first Olympic Games took place here. Democracy, Western philosophy, political sciences are born in Greece, as well.

Athens is the capital of Greece since 1838; from 1829 till 1838 Nafplion was the capital of Greece. Beside Athens, other major cities, are:
· Patras
· Volos,
· Larissa
· Chania (Crete)
· Heraklion (Crete)
· and in the north of Greece, Thessaloniki.

Greece has the 10th longest coastline worldwide measuring a length of 14.880 km, whereas its land boundaries are 1,160 km in total.

What most people do not know is that beside the hundreds of Greek islands, 80 % of Greece is covered with mountains or hills, thus, making Greece one of Europe’s most mountainous countries.
