 > ARCHANGELOS
ARCHANGELOS - Rodos Island
Archangelos Rhodes from the hill
  GENERAL INFORMATION
Archangelos is one of the biggest settlements in Rhodes with more than 6000 round-the-year inhabitants. Here you will be able to enjoy the most enjoyable Greek holidays. It is located 19 kilometres away from the City of Rhodes in the east side of the island and approximately 16 kilometres away from Lindos. It is a lush green mountain village. Archanggelos was known in antiquity as the city of Pantoreon that belonged to the city-state of Ialissos and used to be located at the coastal spot Petronas. However in the Middle Ages it was transferred in the mainland to secure itself from the attacks of the pirates and was given the name by which it is known today. The inhabitants are occupied in the tourist business as well as in agricultural production. In the area there are lots of vineyards, olive trees and other fructiferous trees. There are also some traditional pottery and carpet workshops, which indicates how supportive the inhabitants are of their traditions. Besides that, the locals are also famous of their kindness and hospitality. In the picturesque central square of the village you will be able to find a post office, some banks, a medical centre as well as taxis for your transport. There are also some coffee shops and restaurants for all tastes, both located on the square and scattered through the village.

The village of Archagellos, like most villages in Rhodes, combines the past and the present, featuring both old and modern buildings. Lots of archaeological treasures have been discovered in the area and you can admire them in the archaeological sites of the area. Other sites worth visiting include the Byzantine Castle which was repaired during the Knights’ rule. You van get there by walking for 15 minutes. There is also the church of Archangel Michael with its exquisite bell tower dating back to the 15th century and of course the famous monastery of Virgin Mary of Tsambika. There are many springs in the area where cool and clear waters flow, as well as the Koumelou cave located in the top of the hill of the same name. Besides its natural beauty the cave is also of great archaeological significance since recent excavation in the place brought in the light of day various objects and vases from the Neolithic and the Mycenaean age. This very fact indicates that this area had been inhabited since antiquity.
